Ingrown Toenail

An ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis) is most often located on the big toe and is when the side on the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing redness, swelling, pain and often if left untreated causes infection.  This can be caused by improper trimming, poor fitted shoes or most commonly due to the shape of the nail.

If you believe you have an infection (please call us if unsure) we recommend you to contact your GP who can usually provide a prescription to get antibiotics and start treatment within 24 hours of your call.  This will help with the infection but you must also have podiatry treatment to deal with the ingrown nail.

Our routine podiatry appointment includes conservative treatment and consultation for ingrown toenails.

Where appropriate the podiatrist may suggest you require surgery to have either total or partial nail removal under local anesthetic, this would be discussed in more detail during the appointment as required but for more details regarding surgery please  click here.

For all new patients we obtain a medical and surgical patient history, including medications prescribed which will be recorded at the first appointment.  We also perform an initial foot assessment to determine vascular and neurological status of the feet.

Existing patients will have their details checked regularly and assessments repeated as required.
